Carding half of the Eruption 10 kickboxing fight night with females has proven to be extremely popular for promoter Lance Searancke who expects a big turnout of support at New Plymouth's YMCA on Saturday night.
Five of the 10 fights will feature female fighters from the Spartan Fitness barn for a night that's main theme was an interprovincial challenge between Taranaki and Wellington.
"It's the first time it's ever happened with us," Searancke explained. "We had a lot of names come through from Wellington gyms so we've come up with this idea for the show."
The fact that half the card would be women fighting coincided with an influx of females getting involved in the sport and his gym earlier this year.
"They all wanted to fight so I set them a goal to fight at the end of the year and I'd put a show on," Searancke added.
Behind their motivation were a variety of reasons but he said the main one centred on fitness and wanting to lose weight.
The results, he said, have been quite staggering with some of the women losing up to 20kg since they took up the sport.
The five women stepping into the ring for the first time face three two minute rounds to get through with Searancke confident they would match up to their Wellington opponents well.
"It seems to be attracting a lot of interest because I think the girls have a wide circle of friends. They're all excited and can't wait to get in there."
As well as the female fights, the main bout of the night will feature New Plymouth heavyweight Josh Campion who will be up against Wellington's Gene Freakin.
Other New Plymouth fighters carded include Jesse Grayling, Kieran Dolan and Adam Walsh.
While the corporate tables are sold out general admission tickets were still available.
